Date Added: 01 January 2006
This is a late 19th century crucifixion scene built in a bottle. The cross is made from dark natural brown wood with bevel cuts on both the upright and the cross arm. The cross rests in a plaster or clay like base that covers the bottom of the bottle. In front of the cross and sitting on a stool is a large rooster painted yellow. The stool is painted green on the bottom and blue on top. To the rear of the rooster is a long pole with a sponge on top. Behind the sponge is a long spear and a hammer with 3 nails. On the other side of the rooster is a large barrel painted in a folk green with 3 black bands painted on the barrel. There is a pair of dice glued to the base. On the backside of the cross is a large green painted ladder with six rungs. The bottle is sealed with a large wooden shaft with a small cross piece on the bottom making it impossible to remove the stopper. On the outside of the bottle and mounted to the shaft is a large decoratively carved stopper. The top has eight separate sections carved in relief and painted in different subdued folk colors.
