Bottle 925 - Winder with Glass Beads in a Bottle
Date Added: 25 February 2016

This is a rare example of what is thought to be Georgian folk art from the Tbilisi, Georgia region. The glass bottle is hand-blown with a dimpled or kick-up base with a large pontil. Inside are four tiers, each with four arms that extend to the sides of the bottle. The arms are covered with different colorful threads or yarn. They are attached to a yarn covered pole that goes from the bottom of the bottle to near the top. Glass beads are laced on string and then looped from arm to arm creating a beautiful diamond pattern. There is also a string hanging down from the end of each arm with glass beads hanging down. The structure is all held firmly in position with a wooden stopper also covered in the yarn or tread. What looks to be paper covers the opening of the bottle but over time much of it has flaked away. It measures approximately 8 1/2 inches by 2 3/8 inches. This whimsey is in remarkable condition considering that it was made 175 to 195 years ago.
