Ships, Folk Art, and Whimsey in Bottles

This cross in a bottle was built as a memorial bottle and is dedicated "In loving memory of all Steamer Men God Bless Them" Alex Spragg 43 Beacon Road Fulham London" This is dated: "24 March 1948." The cross is attached to a base of three pieces of wood stacked in a pyramid shape. The crosspiece, along with the stacked wood slats are screwed to the upright timer of the cross. There are two George VI stamps marked 2 1/2 pence from the United Kingdom glued to the middle of the bottle. On the back of the stamps is written: " "In loving memory of all Steamer Men God Bless Them. Alex Spragg 43 Beacon Road Fulham London" This is dated: "24 March 1948." Also in the bottom of the bottle are two George VI stamps, one two and a half pence, and the other a one pence stamp. The bottle is sealed with a wooden stopper that extends over the top of the upright timber of the cross. Outside the bottle, the stopper has rope going through holes drilled in the stopper which are professional tied into a Turks Head knot around the neck of the bottle.
