Bottle 494 - Saint Nikolay (Nicolai)

This is an exceptional, competition model of the "Saint Nikolay," (also, Nicolai) a Frigate, lost in a battle in 1790 and found in 1948. The ship is a whole hull model built to exacting detail to the actual ship. The ship's deck includes the gratings, hatches, pumps, beakhead, capstan, windlass, whipstaff, rudder, catheads, ladders, fife rails, binnacle, wheel and skylight. There are also the details of the ringbolts , hinges, hoops, bolts, anchor , and assorted metal fastenings. The frigate has 3 masts, the foremast, the mainmast ,the mizzenmast and the bowsprit sticking out at an angle of about 45 degrees from the bow. The masts are all made from bamboo. The masts are in 3 sections - the mainmast which is secured to the mainmast step, the main topmast, and the flagpole. The masts have crosstrees on each section. The ship has a spar deck, forecastle, main hatch, and a gun deck There are 44 guns each with red gun ports in an opened position. The ship is displayed with 13 unfurled sails and two lower mast sails rolled up. All sails are made with the stitch and reef lines showing. The sails are made from fine silk. The yards are built with footropes. The bowsprit is built in two sections and has a dolphin striker. A long banner flies from the mainmast flagpole and a smaller flag flies from the mizzenmast. The ship has a stern gallery with wonderful detail brought out in the striking black with white accenting the windows and ships decorations. The is white deck railing around the bow and stern deck areas. The ship has authentic detailed standing and running rigging. The standing rigging is in black and the running rigging in gray/brown tone. There are shrouds with ratlines going to each section of each mast and each shroud has main chains. The masts and yards are correctly proportioned to the size of the hull and to each other. The ship rests in a cradle in the bottom of the bottle and the bottle sits on a cradle on a decorative plinth with light and dark wood for accent. The bottle is sealed with a cork and decorative gold rope.
