Bottle 312 - Neptun Basel in a Bottle
Date Added: 01 October 2005

This is a very accurate and detailed model of a Swiss paddle steamer "Neptun" in operation around the period of 1919 - 1930. The hull is green on the bottom, brown in the mid area and yellow on the upper portion. There are 2 thin black stripes on the upper hull. Numerous port holes are placed in the hull. The deck is gray and full of features found on this type of model. There are two paddles extended beyond the hull in the mid ship area. The name "Neptun" and "Basel" are painted on the sides. There is a cabin structure above each paddle with port holes, green roof and railing on the front and back. Spanning both wheel houses is a long, narrow walkway with a raised steering cabin with a green roof and windows. Stairs come up on both sides from the main deck. There are 2 black steam stacks with a red band and a white diamond near the top. Hanging from davits on each side are life boats with 2 oars painted on. There is a single mast with rigging in the bow of the ship. A flag with the name "Neptun" is flying from the top. There are many detailed features throughout the deck and cabin areas. The ship sails in choppy waters. There is a red buoy in the water with an "87" on it, the year the model was made. Under the sea is a small label with the following information: "Johann Lonz Radenbacherstrasse 31 5450 Neuwied 11." The bottle is sealed with a cork and red sealing wax and rests on a simple wooden stand. The bottle is sealed with a cork and on the inside is written the following: "Joh. Lonz, 12.87 Neuwied." This is the name of the modeler, the year the model made and where he was from. "Joh. Lonz, 12.87 Neuwied." The following information was provided by Herbert Lonz, son of the craftsman of this model. "This model was made by Johann Wilhelm Lonz, who died in November 2003. He was 88 years old at the time of death. He learned this art working with his father on a Rhine ship, and was a seaman and also a ship captain on the rivers in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and France. Everything to do with ships became his hobby. He modeled ships and built radio-remote controlled ships. He sold many of his scaled ship models to other people. Each model is unique a required many hours and days of manual work to build. He built his ships in bottles during the last 30 - 40 years." He also made the models #307, 308, and 311.
