Ships, Folk Art, and Whimsey in Bottles

This is a model of a 5 masted clipper ship at anchor in a sea of green. The ship is very well made and proportioned. It is likely built in the 1880 - 1900 period. It has few detailed features such as deck structures which is common on ships of this period. The hull is black the deck and bulwarks in light natural wood. The ship has 5 masts and is wonderfully rigged with both standing and running rigging. The spars and yards are nicely proportioned to the size of the masts and length of the ship. An American flag flies from the top of the mizzenmast. The bottle is sealed with a cork and the end of the bottle opening is painted in a light blue color. This bottle came from the estate of the granddaughter of General Charles Taylor, the owner and creator of the Boston Globe until his death in 1921.
