Bottle - Jesus at Calvary in a Bottle
Date Added: 20 May 2018

This remarkable Crucifixion scene in a bottle contains a wonderfully carved figure of Jesus nailed to the cross with an INRI plaque over His head. There are equally well-carved figures of the two thieves on each side. The thieves are tied to the cross with rope binding their arms and ankles. The crosses are mounted on a raised wooden floor with alternating colors of wood.. Four support pieces raises the floor from the bottom of the bottle. Several symbols of the crucifixion including a hammer, pliers, flail, spear, sponge, and rooster. Under the floor is a piece of paper that has some writing but not all of it is clear. What is clear is the date 6 March 1902 and the artist's name J.J. Steur. The bottle is sealed with a wooden stopper that has an acorn-shaped carving on the bottom of the stopper. There is a crosspiece going through the stopper with a pad lock going through the arms on each side. The top on the outside is an amazing example of fine carving. There are two other bottles not listed in this Gallery that were made by this artist. One was signed "Jacob Steur, Feb 20, 1877", and the other is signed Jacob Steur, Albany, NY."
