Ball in Hand Winder
Date Added: 01 October 2005
This is a model of 3 yarn winders built in a mid 1800's hand-blown bottle with pontil bottom. Every piece is in natural wood and intricately carved in various shapes and designs. The base is built in a x shape and curved to conform to the concave bottom of the bottle. It is carved in a very detailed design and there is a small wooden cup on a four leg extensions. Inside the cup is a ball of the yarn or thread used on the winders. Rising from the center of the base is a beautifully carved center column with multiple carved designs from the bottom to the top. Midway on the shaft there are 2 identical vertical yarn winders, on each side of the shaft. Each has 4 arms delicately carved. Carved on the end of each arm is a "U" that holds the yarn. On the top of the center column is another yarn winder made identical to the other 2 except this winder rests in a horizontal position. In the center is another wooden cup with a ball of yarn. The bottle is sealed with a wooden shaft with the end inside the bottle carved in a pretty design. Inside the bottle, the shaft has wooden circular extensions from the shaft that prevent the top from being removed. The circle pieces are intricately carved even on the underside. Outside the bottle is a very detailed top carved in a wonderful pattern. The sides bevel toward the top and on that is a wonderfully carved hand griping a ball. The hand is very detailed in the treatment of the thumb and fingers. This is a hand-blown bottle with pontil mark on the bottom.
