SMS BEOWULF in a Bottle
Date Added: 19 September 2017
SMS (Seiner Majestät Schiff = His Majesty Ship) BEOWULF was the second vessel of the six-member Siegfried class of coastal defense ships (Küstenpanzerschiffe) built for the German Imperial Navy. She was built by the AG Weser shipyard between 1890 and 1892 in Bremen - where also Matthias Schultz is born. She served in the German fleet throughout the 1890s and was rebuilt in 1900 - 1902. She served in the VI Battle Squadron after the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, but saw no action. Beowulf was demobilized in 1915 and used as a target ship for U-boats thereafter. She was ultimately broken up for scrap in 1921. Schultz has decided to take the original version of this ship from 1892 with only one funnel and placed it into a bulgy bottle of Dimple. The hulk of the model is divided into three parts, funnel and pontoon bridge are added extra. To show the two screws and the special form of the hulk - which was responsible for the nickname of this class: "Meerschweinchen" (guinea pig) it is placed without "water" directly on the ground of the glass. There is a big Turk’s Head knot on the bottle neck and the Iron Cross on the sealing wax.
