Suspended Lanterns in a Bottle
Date Added: 13 February 2015
This is 19th Century whimsey puzzle built inside an octagonal bottle which has marked 1-6 in Roman Numerals. The bottle contains a cleverly inserted hanging arrangements of objects built on three tiers that are suspended with a thread coming from the bottom of a wooden stopper. Each tier has a decoratively carved crosspiece with an intricately carved lantern-like carving hanging from each of the four arms of the crosspieces. The middle row also has tiny ball in cage lanterns with free floating balls inside each lantern. The bottle is sealed with a wooden stopper with a wooden crosspiece making it impossible to remove the stopper. On top of the stopper is a very fancy wooden chain with the top inscribed with the date 1846, the initials I F (presumably the initials of the maker) a bird with a star and a bird on a branch of leaves.
